Weekend Recap

The boys travelled down the Malahat Friday for a date with the Victoria Grizzlies. The boys came out strong and played a solid opening 5 mins, but would take a Too Many Men penalty which would de-rail the momentum. The Grizzlies were able to capitalize on the powerplay and never looked back. They would head to the locker room with a 5-0 lead after 2 periods. The Caps looked like a different team in the third, beating grizzlies goalie Kyle Kelsey 3 times. It was not enough to complete the comeback, but it gave the boys some confidence and momentum heading into Saturday. Lavelle, Haymes & Jacobs would find the goal column for the Capitals.

Saturday, the Caps hosted the Powell River Kings for their Mental Health Awareness night. After a powerful pre game ceremony, both teams came out strong and played a back and forth period. The Kings would open the scoring late in the period, but Massimo Lombardi would score a beauty with just over a minute to play to even the score before the break. An early shorthanded marker would give the Kings an early 2nd period lead, but the Caps would rip off three straight goals to head into the third with a 4-2 lead. A last minute goal by the Kings would make things interesting, but the Caps were able to hang on for the 4-3 victory. Scoring for the Capitals was Lombardi, Lavelle, Jacobs and Brault. Captain Brett Fudger would add 2 assists, while Mccoy Bidewell would turn away 40 of 43 shots faced.

Sunday saw an afternoon rematch against the Kings. This game followed a similar script as Saturday with the Caps heading into the 3rd with a 4-2 lead. Both teams would trade goals in the third, with the Capitals skating their way to a 5-3 victory. AP Zach Vaillancourt would score his first BCHL goal, along with goals from Lombardi, Wilson, Bawa and Matty Edwards. Bidewell would be called upon for his 3rd start in as many days, turning out another strong performance turning aside 32/35.

With the two wins over Powell River the Caps have now passed the Kings and sit in the 8th & final playoff spot in the Coastal Conference. Coquitlam sits 1 point ahead of the Caps in 7th, but has a couple games in hand. Needless to say, the Caps have a lot of work ahead if they want to clinch a playoff spot.
