Game 6 Recap: Capitals comeback vs Dogs, continue record start

Cole Broadhurst’s 2nd of the season came halfway through the 3rd, on a perfectly placed backhand shot and eventually turned into the game winner in Cowichan’s 3-2 victory over Alberni Valley on Friday night at the Cowichan Community Centre. The win moved Cowichan to 5-1, their best start to a season since 2003, which is as far back as the BCHL game by game records go. Josh Kagan opened the scoring in the game with his 4th of the season halfway through the 1st, only to be answered by Alberni’s Mitch Deelstra just 39 seconds later. Two minutes after that, the ‘Dogs went in front on a long range shot for Steven Castagna’s 1st of the season, and the first time in 4 home games that Cowichan trailed. Mid-way through the 2nd, Cowichan would equalize it, as Olivier Gauthier’s original chance was stopped, but then Alberni net minder Luke Pearson tried to slide it to his defender net front, when Gauthier picked it off and slid in his 4th of the year. That was the only goal of the 2nd, and Broadhurst potted the only marker in the 3rd, for Cowichan’s 5th win in 6 games to start the season. Zach Borgiel allowed 2 goals on 7 shots in the first period but then put together a brilliant final 40 minutes stopping the final 18 Bulldogs shots, including some massive saves late in the 3rd. It’s his 5th win of the season, which places the Capitals net minder alone at the top of the BCHL goalie wins category.

The Capitals are now 5-1 on the season, and have 10 points, tied for the best record and most points in the BCHL, and sit at 4-0 on home ice, wrapping up this 3 game home stand against the Penticton Vees Saturday night at the Cowichan Community Centre, in a rematch of last year’s Interior Division Quarter-Finals series.
