Game 5 Recap: Caps use quick start to soar past Eagles at home

The Cowichan Capitals got off to another quick start on home ice, scoring three times in the first 8 minutes on route to a 5-2 win over the Surrey Eagles to now push Cowichan to 4-1 on the season. The last time that Cowichan won four out of the first five games of the season was back in 2013/14, and while it’s still early, the start to the season has been tremendous. The Capitals got a pair of goals from Josh Kagan, both of which came on the power play and Luc Wilson added a power play goal of his own as the Caps went 3/5 on the man advantage, including Kagan and Wilson scoring on both ends of a 4 minute double minor power play early in the 1st. Cruz Cote got the scoring started with his first of the season two minutes into the game on a 2 on 0 chance with Clark Webster, and the Capitals led 3-0 just 8 minutes into the game. Surrey pushed back late in the 1st with goals from Carter King and Holden Katzalay trimming Cowichan’s lead to one after the 1st. There wasn’t any scoring in the 2nd, and Kagan added his 2nd of the night and 3rd of the season on a breakaway fresh out of the penalty box to make it 4-2 Cowichan early in the 3rd. The line of Kagan, Wilson and Andy Bridgewater would add one more in the third with some brilliant passing leading to Kagan setting up Bridgewater with a behind the back drop pass for Bridgewater’s 2nd of the season and a 5-2 Cowichan win. Zach Borgiel moved to 4-0 on the season, stopping 29/31 in the game, while Thomas Scarfone took the loss in the Surrey goal making 29 saves on 34 shots, denying 3 Capitals breakaways and a Zach Brooks penalty shot in the 2nd period alone. Clark Webster added a pair of assists in the game, his first two points of the season, while Kagan (2-1-3) and Wilson (1-2-3) each had 3 points in the game.

At the moment, the Capitals have a couple of players near the top of the league in some statistical categories. Tyrell Boucher, who leads the Capitals in points with 7, all of them assists, is tied for the league lead in defenseman scoring in Powell River’s Ben Wozney, his 7 helpers are also the most of any player in the league.  Zach Borgiel is tied for the league lead in wins with Powell River’s Matteo Paler Chow, each with 4 early in the season. His goals against average (1.50) and save percentage (.950) are also ranked 2nd and 3rd amoung goalies that have played more than 60 minutes of action.
