Capitals Drop Pair of Weekend Games

Friday, January 27 – 5-2 loss at Alberni Valley Bulldogs

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, including a goal in the final second of the period, which would pace them to a 5-2 win over the Capitals at the Weyerhauser Arena on Friday night. The game was the start of a stretch that will see the Caps play 10 games in 20 days. Jared Domin and Alec Zawatsky had goals on the night, both on the powerplay in the third period. The Caps would go 3-3 on the penalty kill and 2-8 on the powerplay, as they tied a season-high for powerplay opportunities. Goalie Lane Michasiw made 35 saves on the night, as Alberni led 40-37 in shots. Michasiw also passed Derek Dun for the most saves among Capitals goalies since 2003-04 (2,565 saves). Attendance: 939.

Saturday, January 28 – 5-0 loss vs. Wenatchee Wild

The Wild led 1-0 after the first, 2-0 after the second and tacked on three third-period goals en route to a 5-0 win over the Capitals at the Island Savings Centre on Saturday night. The Capitals were 5-5 on the penalty kill and 0-6 on the powerplay, and the Wild led 37-20 in shots on the night. Goalie Adam Marcoux stopped 32 shots in goal for Cowichan. The Capitals finish their regular season schedule against Mainland Division teams at a 6-7-0-0 mark. Attendance: 795.


Caps Alumni Brossoit Earns First NHL Win

Edmonton Oilers goalie Laurent Brossoit, a Port Alberni, BC native who played with the Capitals in 2009-10 as a 16-year-old, earned his first NHL win on Jan 21 at the Calgary Flames, a 38-save performance in a 7-3 Oilers win. Click here to see the game recap from The Canadian Press.

Clements Hockey Classic at the Big Stick:

On Saturday, February 11 at the Island Savings Centre, members of the Vancouver Canucks alumni will take on local police and firefighters in an exhibition game; a fundraiser for the Clements Centre Society’s 60th Anniversary. A total of 16 members of the Canucks Alumni group will be present, including Dave Babych, Jyrki Lumme, John Grisdale and more to be announced. Members of the Capitals will serve as guest coaches for the game. The game begins at 7:00 pm and will feature two 25-minute periods; there will be an autograph signing session at 5:15 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance for adults and $5 for children (aged 6-12), and at the door will be an extra $2. For tickets visit the Capitals box office or call 250-748-9930.

Minor Hockey Jersey Days:

Every Capitals’ Sunday home game is a Minor Hockey Jersey Day. Players wearing their minor hockey team jersey will get in for free. The final Sunday home games are Feb 12 vs. Merritt Centennial, and Feb 26 vs. Powell River Kings.
