Capitals Weekly Review – January 24

Vs. Coquitlam Express 01-08-2017.

Capitals Drop Home-and-Home with Victoria

Thursday, January 19, 5-4 loss (OT) at Victoria Grizzlies

The Caps led after the first period and second period over the Grizzlies, but Victoria battled back to tie the score at 4-4 in the third and eventually win in overtime at The Q Centre. John Sladic opened the scoring with a powerplay goal less than three minutes into the game – his first goal since Sep 23 (seven games). Jared Domin also scored in the first period; Mitch Skapski scored his first goal as a Capital early in the second period, and Ayden MacDonald had a goal late in the middle period. Goalie Lane Michasiw stopped 47 shots on the night. The Capitals went 2-6 on their powerplay, ending a 1-40 streak on the man-advantage in their past 10 games.

Friday, January 20, 4-2 loss vs. Victoria Grizzlies

In the team’s final meeting of the 2016-17 regular season, the Caps suffered a 4-2 loss in front of a season-high 1,155 fans at the Island Savings Centre on Friday night. The Grizzlies went up 2-0 after the first, and would get ahead 3-0 midway through the second, before Ayden MacDonald scored later in the period, his fifth goal in six games. Victoria would make it 4-1 just 23 seconds into the third, but Michael Montambault would get one back for the Caps, scoring his first goal in 13 games. That would be as close as the Capitals would come, despite a 39-22 edge in shots on the night – their largest positive shot-differential to date this season.
