Capitals Weekly Review – January 10

Cowichan Capitals vs. Coquitlam Express: 01-08-2017. (John Verrall)

Caps End Weekend With Win at Home

Wednesday, January 4 – 5-1 loss at Alberni Valley Bulldogs

The Capitals first game of the 2017 calendar year was a 5-1 loss to the Bulldogs at the Weyerhauser Arena. Jared Domin scored early in the second period to make it a 1-1 game, but Alberni would pull away with two goals in the second and two in the third. Adam Marcoux made 42 saves on the night. Defenseman Nii Noi Tetteh returned after missing 12 games with an upper-body injury; he had the primary assist on Domin’s goal.

Friday, January 6 – 2-1 loss at Nanaimo Clippers

The Caps dropped a close game to the Clippers at the Frank Crane Arena on Friday night. Nanaimo would score a goal in the first and another in the second. Nick Wilson had the Capitals only goal, coming shorthanded in the final five minutes of the third, and a late push by Cowichan would fall just short. Lane Michasiw stopped 26 shots on the night.

Sunday, January 8 – 5-0 win vs. Coquitlam Express

The Capitals earned their first victory of the calendar year and ended a three-game losing streak with a win at home against Coquitlam on Sunday. Max Newton scored his 20th goal of the year in the first period, and alternate player Nick Guerra made it 2-0 just 11 seconds into the second. The Caps would take on three goals in the third period, as Ayden MacDonald, who was returning from a four-game suspension, made it 3-0; Jared Domin would score on the following shift and Justin Perron scored late in the period. The Capitals had a season-high 48 shots and allowed a season-low 17. Goalie Lane Michasiw earned the shutout win – his second of the season and fourth of his BCHL career.

Capitals trade Keremidschieff to Lloydminster

Ahead of the Jan 10 BCHL trade deadline, the Caps sent D Jake Keremidschieff (98) to the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for future considerations. The move gives the Capitals seven defensemen and 22 players total on their active roster. Keremidschieff, from White Rock, BC, had one assist in 31 games; the team wishes him well in his future with the Bobcats.
