Capitals Weekly Review – December 20

Capitals Win Pair of Games in Final Week Before Break

Wednesday, Dec 14 – 2-0 win vs. Alberni Valley Bulldogs

The Caps earned their first shutout as a team this season on Wednesday night, a 2-0 victory over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The game was scoreless until the final four minutes of the third period, when Trevor Ayre scored his fourth goal in as many games with 3:40 left to play. Ayre tipped in a Marshall Skapski point shot for his second game-winning goal in as many games as well. Skapski earned his first point as a Capital, and Max Newton would add an empty netter with eight seconds left to play in regulation. Lane Michasiw stood tall in the Caps crease, earning first-star honors in making 38 saves for his third career shutout.

Saturday, Dec 17 – 4-2 win vs. Prince George Spruce Kings

The 740 fans at the Big Stick didn’t have to wait long for the teddy bear toss goal, as Jared Domin scored post-and-in on a breakaway just 5:44 into the first. George Sennott would finish off a 2-on-1 with Chris Harpur just 1:41 later. The Spruce Kings would score later in the period and score in the second to tie the game 2-2, but Ty Pochipinski put the home team up once again with a powerplay goal at 10:54 of the second. Pochipinski got an early Christmas present when goalie Tavin Grant went to handle a rim behind his goal, but the puck took a bounce right in front of the net and the Caps forward cleaned up the mess. That would hold up as the eventual game-winner, as Justin Perron would add a goal midway through the third, getting an early Christmas gift himself: Perron flipped a puck into the Spruce Kings zone from just past center ice, which bounced on Grant when he came out to play it, bouncing under his left pad and into the goal. Caps goalie Adam Marcoux made 29 saves and was the game’s first star, winning his fourth straight start.
