DUNCAN, BC – The Cowichan Capitals have made some organizational changes, and are under new management. The changes include hiring Mike Vandekamp to return to the Capitals as Head Coach and General Manager, and have relieved Brian Passmore of his duties. We are extremely excited to welcome Mike back to the team and community and look forward to the future success of the Cowichan Capitals.
The Capitals sit 5-11-1 through 17 games, 8th in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference, having scored the fewest goals in the league to this point. Last season, the first full year back after the COVID shutdown, Cowichan finished 8th in the Coastal one point ahead of Powell River after a 15-33-5-1 season.
In two seasons under the leadership of Vandekamp from 2018-2020 the Capitals accumulated a record of 52-51-10-3 including a 35-16-5-2 record in the 2019/20 season, when the Capitals were set to make an appearance in the 2nd round of the BCHL Playoffs for a second consecutive year. The 35 wins that season, were the most since a 36 win season in 2011-12.
The Capitals would like to thank Brian for his time spent leading the Capitals over the past 3 years and wish him the best of luck in the future.
The Capitals regular season continues this weekend with a pair of games on the mainland, Cowichan visits Chilliwack (6-9-0-1) Friday night and Langley (5-11-0-2) on Saturday. Both games are available for streaming online on BCHL TV or free audio coverage on 89.7 Juice FM. The Capitals next home game is Friday November 25th against Victoria.
