Capitals announce Slade Firkus and the 2026-27 leadership group ahead of the new season

Duncan, BC – The Cowichan Capitals are proud to announce their leadership group for the 2026-27 BCHL season, naming Slade Firkus captain and Andrew Cowgill and Carter DeKay alternate captains.

Firkus returns for his second season in Cowichan after establishing himself as an important part of the Capitals both on and off the ice during his rookie campaign. The Irma, Alberta native recorded 10 goals and 37 points last season and will wear the “C” as he enters his second year with the organization.

“It’s a big Honour. Having it means to me that I’m a guy everyone can trust to come to and lead by example. I learned a lot from the Leadership Group last year and just wanna keep passing that along to the guys here.”

Joining Firkus in the leadership group will be returning defenceman Andrew Cowgill and Carter DeKay, each wearing an “A” this season. DeKay returns for his third full season with the Capitals after recording nine goals and 23 points in 42 games during the 2025-26 campaign. Cowgill, meanwhile, joined the Capitals midway through the 2025-26 season and established himself as a key member of the team’s defensive corps.

The Capitals open the 2026-27 BCHL regular season with their home opener presented by Duncan Dodge this Friday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m. against the Victoria Grizzlies at the Cowichan Community Centre. Cowichan will remain at home Saturday, September 19 for another Island matchup against the Nanaimo Clippers at 7:00 p.m.
