Cowichan Captain Harpur Lands Commitment to Niagara

Duncan, BC – The Cowichan Valley Capitals are pleased to announce that 20-year-old defenseman Chris Harpur has committed to the Niagara University Purple Eagles Division I program for the 2017-18 season.

The Capitals captain is a native of Niagara-on-the-lake, ON, and will be playing right in his backyard. “I’m very happy to announce my commitment to Niagara University. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, coaches and everyone who has supported me along the way. I’m looking forward to hitting the ice close to home,” Harpur said.

Now in his third BCHL season and second with the Capitals, Harpur is enjoying a successful campaign and has thrived with added responsibility due to recent injuries on the back end. Playing in all situations, he has five goals and 24 points in 32 games to date this year. Harpur played 56 games with the Victoria Grizzlies in 2014-15, before being traded to Cowichan that offseason. The 6’3″, 195-lb blueliner has 10 goals and 59 points in 146 career BCHL games.

Niagara University’s Purple Eagles men’s hockey team was founded in 1996-97, and is a member of the 11-team Atlantic Hockey Conference (AHC), with 10 teams in the Northeastern United States and one in Colorado. Previously a member of the defunct College Hockey Academy men’s program (CHA), the Purple Eagles have won a combined four regular season titles, and three tournament titles in their conference (2000, 2006, 2007). The program has appeared in NCAA Tournaments on four occasions (2000, 2004, 2008, 2013). In their 20-year history of men’s hockey, the Purple Eagles boast a 333-306-82 record. Head coach Dave Burkholder is in his 17th season at the helm of the program.
