The 2018 RBC Cup, the 23rd national Junior A championship tournament since its advent in 1996, starts Saturday, May 12 at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack, B.C.
All five clubs – the Ottawa Jr. Senators, Wellington Dukes, Steinbach Pistons, Wenatchee Wild and Chilliwack Chiefs – will be in Chilliwack by the evening of May 10. The official tournament website is HERE.
Several initiatives are planned by the RBC Cup Host Committee in Chilliwack to honour the Humboldt Broncos and the victims of the April 6 bus accident that claimed the lives of 16 of the team’s players, coaches and staff.
Here is a list of events and efforts planned for the week ahead:
Opening Ceremonies are Saturday, May 12 at 7 p.m. and include:
o All five teams, plus officials, in on-ice ceremony
o Sardis Drumline performance
o Juno award-winning jazz performing artist Bria Skonberg to sing the national anthems
New theme of support for the Humboldt Broncos in the event venue and as part of the Opening Ceremonies
o #HumboldtStrong rinkboard ads
o #HumboldtStrong ice graphics behind each net
o All players will have a decal placed on their helmets; all coaches will wear a lapel pin
o A green ribbon has been placed in the centre ice face-off circle dot for the duration of the tournament
o Green #HumboldtStrong tee shirts will be given to every fan who attends the opening night game May 12
o Organ donor registration and blood donation information will be available on the concourse
o The RBC Cup Host Committee has invited the Humboldt Broncos’ president Kevin Garinger and assistant general manager Jason Neville to participate in the Opening Ceremonies and they have accepted that invitation
The 2018 RBC Cup begins in Chilliwack with a 2 p.m. game between Team Central (Wellington) and Team (Ottawa). Fans are encouraged to attend The Beer Garden at RBC Cup, located on the secondary ice surface at Prospera Centre, before the afternoon game and in between it and the start of the Opening Ceremonies at 7:00pm. Appaloosa, Trevor McDonald, and R&B Allstars are scheduled to perform on the entertainment stage in the beer garden throughout the day. The Beer Garden at RBC Cup will be open throughout the tournament with live music and entertainment daily.
